Lonely Mountain Golden Ale

A fledgling brew by Raven Brewing, inspired by Middle-Earth

Overview

Raven Brewing is a fledgling brewery based in Wisconsin with a bold vision for their very first brew. Commissioned to design the label for Lonely Mountain Golden Ale, I helped develop the concept and bring it to life from illustration through to finished label. The brief was rooted in Tolkien, with the Lonely Mountain and the faint silhouette of Smaug sitting at the heart of the design. The reference is intentional but not exclusive. For those who know, it rewards a closer look. For everyone else, it stands on its own as a compelling piece of craft.

The Illustration

The artwork is vector at its core but layered with subtle patterns and textures that give it a depth and warmth that flat vector work rarely achieves. A palette of golds, purples, and reds brings richness to the mountain and sky, while the faint silhouette of Smaug sits above it all, faint enough to feel like a discovery rather than a focal point, but impossible to unsee once you find it.

The Logo

I designed a custom logo for the brew to give it its own identity within the Raven Brewing family. The mark features a nod to the Eye of Sauron at its center, surrounded by fully custom lettering drawn to feel like something pulled from the title page of a fantasy novel. The gold colorway ties directly to the illustration palette, and for those who know Tolkien, it suddenly all connects.

The Label

Bringing the illustration and logo together into a finished label is the moment where everything either clicks or it doesn't. For Lonely Mountain Golden Ale, it clicks. The artwork was mocked up on cans, and seeing it wrapped around the product for the first time is one of those moments that reminds you why this kind of work matters. With the beer currently in production, Raven Brewing is about to put this label into the hands of real customers for the very first time. For a debut brew, it's a strong opening statement.
